The course is led by award-winning practice and experienced educators FAB Architects. This intensive one-week programme provides a comprehensive introduction to architectural education, empowering you to build the necessary skills and portfolio for future studies. Perfect experience and skills to be listed in CVs and personal statements for university applications.

Outcomes

After completing the FAB Architecture Summer School you will have a better understanding of:

  • what it's like to study architecture at university, and to be an architect in practice

  • the best ways to put together a portfolio that will stand out against other applications

  • how to improve your architectural design skills to give you a head start at university (skills include sketching, architectural drawing and collaging, 3D architectural design, model making)

  • how new technologies such as A.I., VR and 3D printing impact design

Open to ages 16 and over

Time: 10am-4pm daily, with a 1-hour lunch break.

Location: FAB Architects office at 23 Grand Parade, Brighton and Hove, Brighton BN2 9QB

Places restricted to maximum 10 students.

Course Leaders

The course is led by Mike Bell, director of FAB Architects, an award winning RIBA chartered practice based in Sussex. Mike is also a trained educator, having taught Architecture at Oxford Brookes University and UAL - Chelsea College of Art and Brighton University - Interior Architecture

Day 1 - Complete guide to navigating the world of architectural education

  • Morning

    • Introduction to the week

    • Learn the route to becoming an architect in the UK and tips at each step of the way

    • Explore architectural interests amongst the group

  • Afternoon

    • Virtual tour of student and practice architecture work

    • Introduce the architectural project

Day 2 - Creative architectural thinking and Brief Development

  • Morning

    • Mini Architectural Project begins

    • Narrative brief discussed collectively

    • Students encouraged to respond to architectural brief, guided by FAB

  • Afternoon

    • Initial ideas development and architectural mood boarding

    • Concept Card Models

Day 3 - Concept and Digital Collage workshop

  • Morning

    • Finalise concept sketches

    • Introduction to architectural collage

    • Photoshop techniques to produce engaging images

    • Exploration of A.I. techniques in the production of imagery

  • Afternoon

    • Architectural visualisation overview

    • 3D Printing and VR introduction

Day 4 - Architectural Sketching + Model Making workshop

  • Morning

    • Learn the basics of architectural sketching and model making

    • Explore the tools and techniques of architectural drawings

    • Develop plans and architectural drawings for a specific building

  • Afternoon

    • Learn to express your ideas through sketching and model making

    • Review of top architect's sketches, drawings and models

Day 5 - Portfolio Review and Q+A (further detail on following pages)

  • Morning

    • 1:1 Review of current portfolios with specific advice on how to improve

    • Examples of top architectural portfolios

    • Portfolio tips and tricks, do's and don'ts

  • Afternoon

    • Mini architectural 'crit' of work produced over the 5 days

    • Final Q+A Session
